IV. 5. Promotion

Promotions are important in the functioning of an institution. Nearly everyone wants to move ahead, both in position and salary. A sound administration will clearly define procedures and standards for promotion. Some institutions spell out in detail the criteria for promotion. Promotions should be based on output of the worker-actual performance on promotion. Every attempt should be made to objectify this process so that feelings and attitudes intrude as little as possible. Promotions should be made on a basis of merit only. When employees know that promotions are handled as fairly as possible, institution morale will be high. Although length of service is a factor, merit and quality of performance are becoming more significant in considering promotion and/or a salary increase.
