Des suffixes et préfixes empruntés par l’intermédiaire des dérivés latins sont entrés en concurrence avec les suffixes hérités, jusqu’à nuire à leur productivité (ptg. ‑ção vs ‑zão, esp. ‑ción vs ‑zón, fr. ‑ation vs ‑aison, roum. ‑ţie / ‑ţiune vs ‑ciune), ou sont venus renforcer la productivité des suffixes lorsque la forme de l’élément hérité et de l’élément empruntés étaient très proches (roum. ‑mînt / ‑ment, it. ‑mento, fr. ‑ment, esp. ‑miento / ‑mento).
